How To Start Getting Up At 5am

I did not used to get up before 10am without being absolutely fuming about it. For many many years I was the girl that every assumed would not make it to lunch because I'd still be asleep (which was usually true). However, now I'm the girl that calls 7am a lie in. It's taken some time but I've managed to transition from being up til 2am and getting up at 11am to going to bed at 10:30 and being up between 5-6am most mornings. But how is this madness possible you ask? Well read on (or watch the YouTube Video) and you will find out how to start getting up at 5am!

This is episode one of my self care for summer series that I'll being doing here on the blog as well as on my Youtube channel! It will have a self-care/getting your life together vibe with summery edges. So, if you want to see more of this kind of content, then you should definitely follow along! (Think summer morning routines, goals, clearing out for summer - that kinda jazz).

#1: Sort your night time routine out

There is absolutely no point in getting up at 5AM everyday if you are not going to get 7-8 hours of good sleep. The first major thing I did was sort out my evenings. I was staying up til midnight, it would take me ages to fall asleep and then I'd struggle to get up for work. By having a good night time routine in place and going to bed around the same time every night, you'll be able to train your body clock when it's time to shut down the old brain (not fully - we aren't aiming for that) to let us get some good sleep! See my post of how to get a better night sleep for some extra tips on this!

#2: Let the light in

I (like most people) find it a lot easier to wake up when it's summer and it's therefore brighter earlier. I now sleep with my bedroom door open as there is a big window in the hallway that lets in light. This used to irritate me as I didn't want to get up, so I'd shut the door, but now I find it really helpful for waking me up gently, sometimes even before my alarm. In the winter (I am speaking as a Brit here), it stays darker for longer. I plan on getting a light based alarm clock to help with this! But this is a summer self care post, so we will leave that for another time!

#3: Put your phone/alarm far away from you

Now, this one will probably fill you with rage at the beginning, but by gum it is effective. I have an alarm clock which I use to wake me up in the mornings which is by my bed - however, I keep my phone in the hallway with a second alarm on. I know if that bad boy goes off, my toddler will hear it and think it's ready to play. That is more than enough motivation to get me up rater than snoozing!

#4: Do something you enjoy in the mornings

I like getting up early because it's my time. I get ready at my own pace, I listen to a podcast, watch a video, do my make up, shower, all stress-free. Compare that to old me that was running around like a maniac, forgetting to do my teeth and wearing my top inside out just to make the 10am train. I made mornings into something I actually like, rater than something I dread. I make my favourite breakfast (either to eat at the time or to eat at work depending on the day) and I use it as time just to focus on myself.

#5: Do it gradually

Chances are, you aren't going to go from waking up at 11am to 5am within a couple of days. It'll take time and honestly, it's better to do it gradually. Otherwise, you end up in nap-city... and that city just causes total sleep carnage. Bring your alarm forward by half an hour for a few days, then bring it forward again and again until you reach your desired time frame. It's a lot less painful doing it this way!

Now, although social media says otherwise, not everyone is programmed to be a morning person or to thrive in the mornings. If you are a night owl through and through, then good for you! But if you do want to try this early morning life, then hopefully these tips can help you. It's definitely a little easier starting this in summer when it's warmer and lighter and less daunting to get up super early!

I'm going to be doing a post all on my summer morning routine, so stay tuned for that!
